You may have seen a post on our Facebook page recently about a Duramax truck getting a transfer case half. Why did it need this you may ask? Well, it had a crack on the same spot as the drain plug and it was leaking. Typically, this is not a common spot for these to leak. This is a pipe plug or pipe thread and it should only be torque to specification when tightening. Was this plug over tightened? Was it a failure of old age? Hard to say, but the repair had to be done none the less.
While we were in this transfer case we were able to take care of another more common concern. The pump that lubricates the transfer case is not given a fair shake for allowing the pump case to last.
This pump is held in place by a small rattle clip that breaks on a lot of trucks. This clip was still in good shape on this unit, but if it breaks, the pump vibrates back and forth in the housing/case eventually wearing a hole in the rear transfer case half. The pump upgrade kit allows a wider cross section of contact for the pump to ride in the rear case half with, it also allows us to install a new anti-rattle clip which will help keep the pump from vibrating in the housing.
This repair we did was twofold – had the crack not been in the case we would have not recommended the pump repair. Having this new upgrade will keep this transfer case going for a long time.
How can you save your transfer case from needing these repairs? Keep the fluid changed regularly, out of all the maintenance we do by far the transfer case is the most forgotten fluid out there. With only three quarts of fluid the service is not that expensive. Keeping this fluid clean will hopefully allow you to enjoy your four-wheel drive truck for many years to come.
